Increase the number and frequency of local farmers’ markets.  The more readily available these markets are the more people will use them.  Farmers can work with the Township, creating pocket markets or stands.

Reduce the need to drive by providing a fast way for people to move throughout the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley. Having this mode of transit in Langley will reduce traffic to get in and out of Langley and increase the number of people coming from the East or West into Langley, which will help the Langley economy and environment.

Energy efficiency micro-grants

Posted by Staff Idea, Nov 12, 2009 - no comments

Create a fund to offset a portion of the costs of energy efficiency upgrades to homes and businesses.  People could submit their renovation/upgrade plan and apply for a rebate to help cover the cost of the upgrade.

I think it would be fantastic to have one location to drop-off all (or most) of the recyclable/returnable items instead of having to drive to multiple locations. Items: paint, batteries, cfl light bulbs, etc.

We don't need such large homes!  People should be encouraged to live in small homes by offering them a break on property tax.  People who live in large homes should pay a higher rate of property tax.

Work with ICBC and the Province to create a raked insurance scheme that rewards people for leaving their car a home.  Drivers who use their vehicles more would pay a higher vehicle insurance rate; People who drive less would pay a lower rate.

A revitalization tax exemption is a financial incentive to allow a developer to build an efficient building.  If a developer builds an efficient building, they may receive a property tax break (exemption) to help pay for efficient building design or technology.  This tax break can last up to 10 years, allowing the building owner to also benefit from investing in a green building.

We need a free store.  This would be a place where folks could drop off items that are not needed, but are still useful.  This could include clothes, building supplies, or household items.

Encourage people to use public transit by placing bus loops, like Langley Centre and Walnut Grove Park and Ride, in safe, busy areas. This can be done by either encouraging businesses to move closer to the stops or by moving the stops closer to central places in Langley. Ideally, the bus stop waiting areas could be placed inside stores. This would mean a constant flow of customers through the store and a safe place for people to wait for the bus.

Ban drive-thrus

Posted by Joe Langley, Nov 12, 2009 - view comment

We are trying to move away from car culture.  We should create a local bylaw to ban drive-thrus in the Township.
